Different Types of Skin Cancer: Melanoma & Non-Melanoma

Skin cancer isn’t just one disease—it comes in different forms, with varying levels of severity. Understanding the differences can help you stay informed and proactive about your skin health.

The three most common types of skin cancer are:

While these are the most frequently diagnosed, there are rarer types of skin cancer such as Merkel cell carcinoma, which also require attention.

Melanoma: The Most Aggressive of the Three Main Types

Melanoma is most commonly found on sun-exposed areas but can also occur in non-sun-exposed areas such as the soles of the feet, under the nails, and even in mucosal membranes (mouth, genitals).

Nodular melanoma often appears as a raised lump, which may be dark but can also be pink or skin-coloured.

Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers: More Common, Still Serious

While non-melanoma skin cancers are less likely to spread than melanoma, they still require prompt treatment. The two most common types are:

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): While BCC commonly appears as a shiny or pearly bump, some forms (e.g., superficial BCC) present as a red, scaly patch resembling eczema or a non-healing sore.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): SCC is more aggressive than BCC but not necessarily aggressive in all cases. It is more likely than BCC to grow deeper and, in some cases, spread to lymph nodes or other areas if untreated.

How to protect yourself:

  • Know your skin: Regularly check for changes.
  • Seek medical advice early: If you notice any suspicious spots, don’t wait.
  • Sun protection is key: In addition to daily sunscreen, wear protective clothing, sunglasses, seek shade, and avoid peak sun exposure when possible.
